Also known as the "Gentle Giant", Green Wing Macaws possess a very sensitive, responsive and loving nature. This bird is second in size only to the Hyacinth Macaw. Usually easy going and docile, an untrained Green Wing Macaw can be a source of pure distress.

Description

The face and plumage of the Green Wing Macaw is a bright shade of red. Like many Macaws, the Green Wing Macaw has the whitish skin facemask. The wing has a green color. The head, shoulders, and breast are a deep red. The wings next to the body of the green wing macaw are greenish turning bluer on the outside edge of the wing. The green Wing macaw is a darker red as compared to the "scarlet" red of the scarlet macaw.

Origin of the Green Wing Macaw

The Green Wing Macaws are mostly found in Eastern Panama in Central America to Northern South America, East of the Andes, to Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay.

  • Although larger than most of the other Macaw species, the Green Wing Macaw has a temperament that is more steady and easy-going.
  • A Green Wing Macaw can be demanding and has a tendency to become aggressive or pluck.
  • An untrained Green Wing Macaw in the house is another name for untold misery.

The Green Wing Macaws are more talkative than other Macaws. Although they are not very good at imitating. They require large space to be comfortable. They require much attention, can be trained to talk - but not considered very good mimics. Requires large space due to large size. Are very demanding and have a tendency to become aggressive or pluck.

The Green Wing Macaw has a very sensitive, responsive, and affectionate disposition. As a youngster, depending on the individual, he may sometimes go through a period of "terrible twos" or over-sensitivity, but this phase will not last for long if met with patience and persistence by praising acceptable behaviors and discouraging those that are not acceptable. The Green Wings tend to be more vocal than the other Macaws in that they make more moans, groans, and baby sounds when they are young.
